In a German sample, dementia cases increased by 0.23% with an increasing prevalence of hearing impairment by 1 SD ( Teipel et al., 2015), and an increased risk of cognitive decline was described in case of a bilateral hearing loss with a hazard ratio of 1.43 ( Fritze et al., 2016). By 2050 up to 900 million people will be living with hearing loss ( World Health Organization, 2018) and 152.8 million with dementia ( Nichols, 2022). Hearing loss and dementia are among the most common chronic diseases in older age and frequently co-occur ( World Health Organization, 2020, 2021 McDonough et al., 2021). However, screening test batteries cannot replace a comprehensive cognitive evaluation. The choice of a cut-off range might help to better reflect the difficulty in clinical reality in detecting MCI. In the MCI group, a cut-off range between 22 and 24 points is proposed to increase diagnostic accuracy to a sensitivity and specificity of 97.5 and 90%, respectively.Ĭonclusion: The German MoCA-H seems to be a sensitive screening test for MCI and dementia and should replace commonly used auditory-based cognitive screening tests in older adults. The optimum cut-off for the detection of dementia was ≤21 points with a sensitivity of 96.3% and a specificity of 90%. Results: A mean score of 25.49 (SD = 3.01) points in the German MoCA-H was achieved in cognitively healthy participants, 20.08 (SD = 2.29) in the MCI and 15.80 (SD = 3.85) in the dementia group. Performance cut-offs for normal cognition, MCI and dementia were estimated for the MoCA-H score and z-scores using the English MoCA-H cut-off, the balanced cut-off and the Youden’s Index. Materials and methods: A total of 346 participants aged 60–97 years (M = 77.18, SD = 9.56) were included 160 were cognitively healthy, 79 with MCI and 107 were living with dementia based on the GPCOG and a detailed medical questionnaire as well as a comprehensive examination by a neurologist in case of cognitive impairment. The aim of the present study was to assess the diagnostic accuracy of the German MoCA-H among those with normal cognition, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia and to determine an appropriate performance cut- off. As the MoCA is known to perform differently across languages, revalidation of the German MoCA-H was necessary. To address the need for a cognitive screening test suitable for people with hearing loss, a visual version of the Montreal-Cognitive-Assessment was developed and recently validated in English (MoCA-H), with good sensitivity and specificity for identifying cases of dementia. Most neurocognitive screening tests are auditory-based, and performance can be affected by hearing loss. 4Centre for Hearing Research (CHEAR), School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Queensland, Brisbane, QLD, Australiaīackground: Hearing loss and dementia are highly prevalent in older age and often co-occur.3MoCA Clinic and Institute, Greenfield Park, QC, Canada.2Department of Geriatric Medicine, Marien Hospital Herne, Ruhr University Bochum, Herne, Germany.1Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Catholic Hospital Bochum, Ruhr University Bochum, Bochum, Germany.Christiane Völter 1*† Hannah Fricke 1† Sarah Faour 1 Gero Lueg 2 Ziad S. I tried to encourage students to ‘act out’ the stories within their speeches (like the story of the Mona Lisa getting stolen.) I was really impressed with how easily the 8th graders spoke in front of their peers. We practiced these presentations before the 4th graders came in to make sure they were appropriately long. After these posters reached perfection, each team came up with a 3 minute speech about the artist’s childhood, professional development, famous artwork, later life, and other fun facts. Students had fun coming up with designs, pictures, usernames, and bios that fit in with their artist. Instagrammers also have a username and a bio on their main page. There are a lot of filters and effects that the Instagram can do to alter their pictures, so Instagrammers feel pretty artsy. For those of you who don’t know much about Instagram….it’s a social media tool that primarily allows people to share images. After students collected facts and images from their favorite artists, they began designing their Instagram-themed posters. So, we’ll start in the beginning where 8th graders teamed up and did some research on the famous artist they selected. As a teacher, it’s awesome watching things come full-circle! This isn’t just the 8th graders presenting to one ’s the 8th graders being role models and teaching younger students about famous artists. 8th graders compiled a quiz for the 4th graders to complete, made up of questions about their artists that they answer in their presentations. They welcomed the 4th graders in and sat them in seats around the art room. 8th graders presented their Instagram posters and written presentations to the 4th grade class. Would they tweet, pin, post pictures, and blog? It’s also kind of fun to imagine what the master artists would have done if they had access to social media. The Social Media aspect keeps it fresh and interesting. Based off of how hard the students worked to make their posters perfectly imitate the layout of Instagram, it was clear to me that this social media twist added a layer of interest to the project. They had to work together in a group to get the research done, poster created, and presentation put together. I paired 8th graders up and they selected the artist they wanted to do research on from a list of names. It is a collaborative and team-based assignment. They tapped into their laptops, used search engines and word documents, and came up with a file that included information and pictures. We also accessed the school’s mobile lab for a day. Kids used books in my art room library as resources. It brings research-type learning into the art classroom. It is a very educational and fact-based project. Here are a few reasons why I like this project so much: But I have heard my students go on and on about Instagram lately… so I decided to switch it up. I loved these, too… If I wasn’t the type of person who gets bored easily and must always try new things, I would have probably done Facebook-inspired Art History projects again this year. Last year, our Art History project was inspired by Facebook. And OK, I’ll admit…I get a kick out of it too, because I use the same forms of social media as they do. I like to make these art history projects social media inspired because it keeps things interesting and fresh for the kids. One of my favorite 8th grade art projects is my annual Art History project. I was was lucky enough to connect with Dale when he was writing the code for the conversion, and I think he’s he’s pretty much nailed it in that almost all patch conversions are 1:1, and he made the isocurve density gradually decrease as each patch gets further away from the triangle or star point rather than continue on toward the next star point in the loop. I spent many hours trying to manually simplify or rebuild patches in these areas, and don’t think there’s any geometric way around it without destroying the flow of the edge loops. I understand why the extra isocurves are required as they have to follow the flow of the the sub-d edge lines which must converge at some point in a triangle or arrowhead shaped quad. When I say Rhino is not perfect, it’s more of an “ideological comment”, as it would nice if every patch had 2 rows of control points for each edge regardless of shape, but I know that’s not mathematically possible in sub-d patches that are not “square”. Personally I found the Rhino system to be the best compromise of the three for overall surface accuracy with it’s 1:1 patch ratio, and can verify that the nurb polysurface is an exact clone of the sub-d surface with full G2 continuity, (even across most triangles). Although Rhino maintains a 1:1 sub-d to nurb patch ratio, it’s not perfect either, as does add more isocurves to patches located at star point junctions or triangles, but the isocurve count is reduced for each patch as they become further away from the star point junction. If I remember right, by default T-Splines splits nurb patches into tiny sections near star point junctions, it also creates a form of “edge loops” that span from one star point to another across a surface, which i remember not liking that much. The plus side to this method is you get a “lighter” nurb model, but with some loss in accuracy especially at sharper corners. In T-Splines I believe you have two options for nurb conversion, where on quads at least, you get one patch per sub-d face, or you can simplify the surface, and bridge patches across multiple faces as long as they do not contain any star points of triangles. Rhino will produce one nurb patch per sub-d face for all quads even at star points, except for “triangles”, which become three smaller nurb patches to maintain continuity. Nurb conversion is very different between the three programs, with Clayoo producing at least four patches per sub-d face similar to polygon based programs such as Lightwave or MODO, except in nurb format. As far as I know, all three are based on the Catmull Clark subdivision system, so the sub-d smoothing part should similar, except T-splines treats “star points”, and “triangles” a little different than the other two, and will not produce G2 continuity at these junctions. At the end we will do a lighting in Rhino and appropriate material and we will get the final rendering render.īy The End of This training Course, you learned how to use T-Splines to model complex organic shapes in Rhino with: Rhino 5, T-Splines, Keyshot 5.I’ve played more with Rhino and Clayoo sub-d conversion than T-Splines or Fusion, but here’s my take on the differences.
